The House Democracy Partnership Commission (HDP) organized a fact-finding mission from April 7–12 to Taipei, Taiwan, during which congressional staff met with Members and senior staff of the Legislative Yuan, as well as civil society professionals and Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Through these exchanges, the delegation identified opportunities for collaboration between the U.S. Congress and Taiwan’s Parliament on cybersecurity improvements, AI and parliamentary modernization, effective constituent engagement, and regional cooperation on parliamentary budgeting.
From April 6–12, the House Democracy Partnership Commission (HDP) led a fact-finding mission to La Paz, Bolivia, to assess the priorities, challenges, and opportunities facing Bolivia’s Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the Plurinational Legislative Assembly. The delegation met with Chamber leadership, Members of the Chamber of Deputies, Executive Branch officials, civil society representatives, and other stakeholders to gain insight into Bolivia’s legislative environment and identify ways to strengthen institutional capacity and effectiveness.
On March 18, the House Democracy Partnership welcomed a group of 30 Members of Parliament from more than 20 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean for a roundtable dialogue as part of their visit with ParlAmericas. At the House Democracy Partnership, we believe that strong, collaborative legislative institutions are key to regional stability and global security. We were pleased to work with ParlAmericas to host a bipartisan roundtable that brought together U.S. Members of Congress and legislative leaders from 20 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean. The discussion focused on the current state of security in the Western Hemisphere and strategies to address cross-border challenges such as transnational organized crime, drug trafficking, and human trafficking.
From December 9-11, 2024, HDP engaged with the National Assembly of Armenia on a program aimed to strengthen public participation in the legislative and budget process. The program featured a delegation led by former U.S. Representative and former Chair of the House Democracy Partnership Congressman David E. Price (D-NC). To support peer-to-peer learning, the program was also supported by Ewan Masson, Community Participation Manager of the Parliament of Scotland and Marci Harris, Executive Director of POPVOX Foundation.
The House Democracy Partnership (HDP) recently traveled to Skopje, North Macedonia, to implement a technical assistance consultancy (TAC) with the Assembly of North Macedonia. This exchange focused on enhancing transparent government through robust legislative ethics. Enhancing legislative ethics is crucial for promoting accountable governance and improving the Assembly's ability to foster ethical leadership and transparency.
The House Democracy Partnership, led by Chairman Vern Buchanan, traveled to INDOPACOM, Japan, the Philippines, Qatar, and Finland to engage in a series of dialogues with leaders and parliamentarians on relations with the United States in the context of the many ongoing conflicts abroad. The U.S. Congress convened a regional exchange in Miami, Florida, from September 7-8, titled “The Role of Parliaments in Transforming Digital Economies in the Caribbean.” As digital economies become increasingly vital to global growth, this exchange focused on the significant role of parliamentary leadership in advancing this transformation across the Caribbean, directly aligning with U.S. economic and regional security interests.
