Recent Activity

From February 23-28, 2024, HDP organized a congressional delegation visit to Panama, Colombia, and Peru to meet with Members of Parliament and key democratic stakeholders in the region. Too often, Central and South America are overlooked in U.S. strategic plans, but we must be present and engaged with our neighbors to underscore the importance of democracy and the rule of law.

In Panama, the delegation met with U.S. Ambassador Aponte, held a roundtable with Members of Parliament, met with President Nito Cortizo, received a briefing from a joint air and naval security team, and toured the Panama Canal.

In Colombia, Members heard from the special judicial jurisdiction overseeing Colombia’s peace process, met with ministers from departments of foreign affairs, justice, and defense, and joined in a reception with counterparts from the Chamber of Representatives.

In Peru, the delegation met with President Dina Boluarte, and after meeting with various members of the Congress, resigned an MOU with the Speaker of the Peruvian Congress to reenergize the collaboration between our respective legislatures.
