Support for Free Elections in Ukraine

October 20, 2016
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC— Chairman Peter Roskam (R-IL) and Ranking Member David Price (D-NC) released the following statement about H.Res. 348, a resolution supporting the right of the people of Ukraine to freely elect their government and determine their future. Roskam and Price recently visited Ukraine with a House Democracy Partnership delegation to meet with members of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament, President Petro Poroshenko, and leaders from Ukrainian civil society, to offer support on behalf of the House of Representatives and the American people. The delegation also visited Maidan Nezalezhnosti, site of the protests that led to the fall of the Yanukovych regime. H.Res. 348 passed the House today by unanimous voice vote.

“On our recent visit to Ukraine, we heard and witnessed firsthand the ongoing Russian aggression taking place throughout the country, both through the occupation of eastern Ukraine and Crimea, and through the propaganda emanating from Moscow. We condemn any efforts by external forces to exert inappropriate influence over Ukraine’s democratic institutions and political system. The United States must stand with Ukraine in protecting its free and open democracy, which can continue to provide stability in the region.

“Today, we were proud to join with our colleagues in the House of Representatives to send the message to Russia and other outside aggressors that the right to choose a government in Ukraine belongs to the Ukrainian people alone.”
