Bipartisan House Democracy Partnership Commission Releases A Statement on the Attack at the Capitol on January 6, 2021

WASHINGTON, DC (January 11, 2021) -- Today, Chairman David Price and Co-Chair Vern Buchanan of the House Democracy Partnership released a statement on the chaos at the Capitol on January 6, 2021:

"January 6th marked a dark day in America. We are appalled at those who breached and overtook the U.S. Capitol Building while Congress met to count the electoral college votes and confirm the selection of the next President of the United States.

"As Americans, we cherish and protect our right to assemble, to speak freely, and to advocate for our beliefs. But, that's not what happened on January 6th – it was a lawless attack on our very democracy.

"Our Congress will not be deterred – as soon as the building was secured, Congress reconvened, shaken, but with renewed resolve to continue our work and ensure a peaceful transition of power.

"Democracy is not automatic – it takes all of us to participate, engage, and ensure that elected representatives have an opportunity to serve the people. It is now time to reflect, to heal, and to move forward together as Americans.

"The House Democracy Partnership will continue its mission. Now more than ever, we can share, collaborate, and work with others around the world and continue to establish our democratic principles and practices. We learned a difficult lesson at home – democracy is fragile and only maintained through careful and consistent practice."
